Ardbeggeddon III - Wednesday January 9, 2002

We woke after a night of much-needed sleep and laughed about our evening over a couple of pots of coffee.  We packed the car and left San Francisco to drive down to Los Angeles to hook up with the PLOWED crowd at FoaFs house in 1000 Malts.  We first stopped by Marie's house in Oakland around 11 am and proceeded to finish the rest of the first Ardbeggeddon.  This task was completed largely by Dave since I was the first driver of the day and Marie was working on her thesis.  We hit the road around 1:30 pm and headed south to Los Angeles down Route 5.  We arrived at FoaF's around 7:30 pm and met up with FX, Rob, Manny, Michael and Tamara.

After great celebration about the safe arrival of The Ardbeggeddons we went to dinner then back to FoaFs for some serious dramming.  I didn't document this pre-Ardbeggeddon dramming session but here's what I remember...

  1. The Ardbeggeddon - 1972 29 yo Sherry-Casked Ardbeg

  2. Earls of Zetland Macallan - 25 yo

Next was an amazing head to head of Balvenies

  1. Balvenie Classic - No age statement (Italian)

  2. Balvenie Classic - 12 yo (French)

  3. Balvenie Classic - 18 yo (Italian)

Thanks again FoaF - An unbelievable set of drams!

  1. Glenmorangie 100 proof Traditional

  2. Caol Ila 19 yo - Coopers Choice

I think there were more drams - we had to restrain FoaF from opening most of the bottles he pulled out of his archives.  Amazing depth of very strange and rare single malts.  Thanks again FoaF!

We then returned to FX's house to crash around 1 am, but somehow we started dramming again.   Here I tried the following

  1. Glen Grant - 1984 12 yo Signatory, 57.9%, Cask 4014

  2. Glen Grant - 1976 25 yo, 43%, Cask 01/247

Note:  this dram needs a few drops of water.  Although bottled at 43% the change is quite amazing.  I need to retaste  and will post tasting notes later.

I finished the night with a dram of The Ardbeggeddon...  it drams very well even after a night of many excellent drams.  Still very pleased with The Ardbeggeddon!   We crashed at 3:30 am and set the alarm for 6:30 am for FX to make an early morning doctor's appointment.

Tomorrow - FOAFing The Liquor Castle and The Wine and Liquor Depot!

Photos from Wednesday are posted here.
